Proceeds from this upscale thrift store provide housing, health care and job training for homeless New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS. New shipments arrive weekly, so stop by often and browse a quality selection of men's and women's clothing, furniture and housewares. And don't miss Housing Works' Long Island City warehouse sale the second Saturday of each month, featuring $20 all-you-can-stuff bags of clothing.

Beacon's Closet
Whether you're a college coed or a working girl on a budget, taking your gently used or never-worn trendy clothing (think H&M and vintage threads from your Nana) to Brooklyn hipster haven, Beacon's Closet is an inexpensive way to replenish your wardrobe. The store's two Brooklyn locations offer 55 percent of their resale price in trade or 35 percent cash. Be aware, however, that Beacon's buyers are notoriously picky and having your items rejected is practically a New York fashionista's rite of passage.

Stocked full of cute current styles (some clothes even have on their original tags) and funky retro threads, you never know what you'll find at this mother of all thrift stores. But "Family Day" Wednesdays – where most color-coded clothing is half price– is the best time to find out.
